Finding Your Ideal Career Fast: Here’s How To Get Started.

Do you feel stuck in a career that’s getting you down?
Most of us blindly jump onto a career path after school or Uni because it will fund our travels, our parents said we should do it, or because we think it’s our only option.

If that sounds like you then don’t worry – it’s completely within your power to change your career path and start doing something that you really enjoy.

The ideal career will be something that challenges you without being too stressful, helps you to feel satisfied, has meaning for you, and allows you to live the sort of lifestyle you like, while working in a suitable environment and with suitable people.

It might sound like a pipe dream, but it’s a lot easier to figure it out than you think.

Assess Your Past Career

Start by looking at your past roles and assessing them to see if there is a pattern there. What did you like about the roles you’ve held in the past? What did you not like/hate? Write out a list that will help you to focus on your strengths and passions.

Remember, in every role there will likely be things that you don’t enjoy all that much. However, when you’re in the right role, doing those things occasionally won’t matter as your overall satisfaction will tip the balance.

Look At Your Childhood

Oftentimes, we can look at your childhood and get a feel for what it was we really loved to do. Were you always painting? Writing? Doing math? They can be little clues that help to point you in the right direction.

Try doing these things again in your own time to see if they could turn into a viable career option.

Know Your Values and Come Up With A Mission Statement

Knowing your values is a must, as you have to make sure that any job you go for is in alignment with them. Once you’ve worked out what you believe in you can steer away from any job that goes against those beliefs.

Coming up with a personal mission statement can be fantastic too. How will you add value to the world?

Maybe your mission statement relates to the industry you’re already in – you are a nurse or medical administrator but want to do something help people internationally and travel the world (Air Evac international jobs and careers are currently hiring),maybe you get a kick out of healthy eating and want to share that passion with others.

Whatever it is, set aside some time to think about it properly so you come up with something that really resonates with you.

Take Personality Tests

Knowing yourself is key to finding a working situation that ticks all of the boxes. Take personality tests like the Enneagram and the Myers-Briggs and see what comes back for you. You could have a whole list of new ideas to consider.

Consider Your Ideal Lifestyle

Don’t forget to consider your ideal lifestyle. How much time do you want off every year? How flexible would you like to be? What do you need to earn to live the life you want? Considering these things is not just a luxury, they will add to your sense of purpose and job satisfaction, and help you on your path to a new career.
