Irish women are “working for free” for the rest of the year, relative to men, because of the gender pay gap, according to the #WorkEqual campaign.
Dress for Success Dublin launched its fourth annual #WorkEqual campaign this week with the aim of highlighting issues around gender equality in the workplace.
Launching the campaign, Sonya Lennon, founder of DfSD, said:
We have a gender pay gap in Ireland of 13.9%. If you shave 13.9% off the end of the year, you land on today’s date. So Equal Pay Day is a symbolic day to highlight the still existing pay gap between women and men.
“While progress is being made, change is happening slowly, and more needs to be done to challenge societal and political attitudes. Lack of affordable childcare, gender stereotyping, inflexible work options, and poor take-up of parental leave are all feeding into the persistent inequalities between women and men.
“With our #WorkEqual campaign this year, we’re aiming to bring together leaders from business, politics, policymaking and civic society to develop practical solutions that will help remove these inequalities.”
Women’s mean monthly earnings are €2,808 in Ireland, compared to €3,423 for men.
Ireland’s Gender Equality Indicators
The European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) publishes a Gender Equality Index to measure the progress of gender equality in all Member States of the EU. According to the 2019 Index, Ireland scores 71.3 out of 100 points, placing it above the EU average.
- Women’s mean monthly earnings are €2,808 in Ireland, compared to €3,423 for men.
- The full-time equivalent employment rate for women is 43.9%, compared to 60% for men.
- A woman’s working life in Ireland lasts for 33.1 years, on average, compared to 40.1 for men.
- 88.7% of women are doing cooking and / or housework every day, compared with 48% of men.
The centrepiece of the #WorkEqual campaign this year will be a thought leadership conference, taking place in The Marker Hotel, Dublin, on Wednesday, 27th November, sponsored by SOLAS, the Further Education and Training Authority.
Other activities planned for the #WorkEqual campaign include:
- A ‘day of action’ and political awareness-raising at Leinster House;
- A ‘Power Lunch’ at Marco Pierre White’s restaurant in Donnybrook, Dublin;
- Briefings and awareness-raising events with Dublin City Council, Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, Fingal County Council and South Dublin County Council; and
- An online campaign to motivate members of the public to prioritise gender equality in their voting decisions for the next general election.
